Stem Cell Therapy for Retinal Degeneration: The Evidence to Date

Researchers have been exploring stem cell therapies to treat vision loss, including vision loss caused by retinitis pigmentosa. Preclinical and clinical studies are showing that stem cell therapies could be new options to treat vision loss with different types of stem cells used to treat different vision lost causes. There are still questions as to how to administer stem cell treatments, how to evaluate results and long-term safety. Stem cell therapies seem like a promising route for treatment of vision loss, but more research still needs to be done.

What this means for Usher syndrome: Because vision loss in Usher syndrome is caused by retinitis pigmentosa, stem cell therapies look to be promising potential treatments. More research needs to be done, but clinical trials have been showing some success.
