Vision There are no proven treatments for the vision loss component of Usher syndrome. However, there are a number of potential interventions that hold the promise of slowing the vision loss. Ask your doctor about a safe diet high in vitamin A and DHA and about the benefits of wearing sunglasses. There are also a number of promising treatments nearing clinical trial that may eventually stop the vision loss completely. These are several years away, but they are very real and very promising. Stay involved with the Coalition for Usher Syndrome Research to learn the latest.
Hearing Loss Most people with Usher syndrome are candidates to use the latest hearing loss technology. There are a number of technologies that can help children with hearing loss acquire access to spoken language. Children with cochlear implants and digital hearing aids can, with the proper supports, communicate using spoken language at a level that is the equivalent of those with hearing. It is important to note that while children with hearing loss can acquire spoken language, enjoy music, and learn to distinguish sounds with the newest technologies, these technologies are NOT normal hearing. These children still need educational assistance to succeed but they can succeed wildly.
Balance Children with Usher syndrome, particularly type I, often have vestibular issues that can effect their balance. These children are often late to sit up and late to walk. These balance issues can be improved with therapy and regularly exercise. Children with Usher syndrome type I can ride bikes, ride horses, and participate in team sports, but they often need therapy to build the proper strength to compensate for the vestibular issues.
Safety Please be safe and smart in the care of your loved one. Dietary changes and therapies should only be undertaken with the supervision of a qualified physician. Usher syndrome is challenging enough. Don't make it harder by taking chances with your health or that of a loved one.
